A fresh and grisly fantasy: Magic Bites is a new grisly urban fantasy. While the horror is well-balanced with humor, I am more impressed with Andrews' world-building. We are introduced to a magic-based reality with a surprising amount of depth and a fresh take on shapeshifters, vampires, and the like. The descriptions for the setting and characters are also well written, making the story as a whole easy to visualize. Besides being a fantasy, anyone with a soft spot for mysteries will be drawn to this whodunnit plot. At first it was... Promising new heroine: I really enjoyed this book. The author creates a believable world which includes fantasy in everyday life. I think the writing is good and it makes me want to know more about Kate and her friends (and enemies.) Great story: This book has a great story involving a great main character, living in a magical version of the present world. First and foremost this book is a mystery investigation. It would be similar to an updated Alfred Hitchcock story line, if Angelina Jolie played the sword wielding investigator. The main character is bold, mysterious and borderline psycho, which makes for excellent reading.
