JET's stated goal for this tool was to design the best spindle sander on the market, and point by point the company has succeeded through better innovation rather than cost cutting. First, this benchtop model is double the weight of others on the market and has a 1/2-horsepower motor versus the 1/4-horsepower motors found elsewhere. This means larger pieces won't bog down and the machine will run smoother. Two excellent design improvements are the relocated and sealed on/off switch (to prevent dust infiltration) and shelves where you can insert and store your five complete spindles. All JET motors are totally enclosed and fan-cooled to prevent overheating and dust infiltration. This translates to longer motor life and less risk of a fire hazard than open motor housing--very important in such a dusty operation. This sander also has a sealed grease box around the oscillation mechanism for dust protection and longer life. The precision-ground table tilts to 45 degrees and accepts a modified insert for angles. Other inserts have air holes to improve dust collection through the 2-inch dust port. While JET shop tools are often sold as price leaders, this one leads with quality instead, and while the price may be higher than other spindle sanders, you get more tool. Good Product:
Received the Sander in great condition, however the quality control at the factory is poor. The table was not square to the spindle. I did some checking and found the table mounting brackets were not drilled and tapped at the same height. I ordered replacement brackets and they were the same as the originals. I fixed it buy installing some brass shim stock under the bracket that the hole was low on and this fixed the table. Needs more storage space & better dust collection.:
I use my spindle sander a lot, and it works great. My biggest problems are: 1. The dust collection simply does not work - at all. I have to stop every few minutes and vacuum off the table surface and under the table (I have mine attached to an 1100 CFM dust collector). I'd like to see some dust collection slots in the plates and a shroud around the bottom of the table. Right now a 2" port just sits next to the hole under the table. waste of money:
I originally had the Delta Boss spindle sander that worked great with daily use for five years and purchased this one as an upgrade model. I would NEVER reccommend this to anyone- it is a poorly made piece of Chinese junk!!!!!! The spindle removal system using two contrived wrenches with little working space was clearly designed by somone who will never use the unit.
