Square holes? No problem. Delta's industrial mortiser offers precision with a 1/2-horsepower motor behind it. A rack-and-pinion system raises and lowers the head, and the mortising head column swings 180 degrees for off-table work. Clearly a step up from Delta's MM300 Shopmaster mortising machine, this one's made with the professional user in mind and includes an adjustable dovetail way on the mortising head, a tool and chisel tray, a gas-filled head stabilizer and multiposition feed lever. There's also a generous 16-3/4-by-13-1/2-inch cast-iron base and 2-15/16-inch tall two-piece fence totaling 13-5/8 inches in length. Bit and chisel changing is easy with the chuck key/hex wrench. Of course, we always want to use new tools right out of the box, and Delta's made sure you can get started right away with 1/4-, 5/16-, 3/8-, and 1/2-inch chisel and bit sets. Beats a drill and hand chisel any day! --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Frustrated:
Avoid this tool at all cost. I purchased one 2 months ago, uncrated and set it up yesterday and used it for the first time today. On the fourth mortise cut, the handle flopped freely and the head stopped in position. Unable to raise or lower the head with the handle, I removed the head from the stand. Upon examination of the gear mechanism I discovered that the pin that holds the gear to the handle had sheared off. I had not really stressed the machine at all so the failure was inexplicable. I've never been... more info
Mortiser good; delivery poor:
I would recommend the Delta 14-651 mortiser and would buy it again. I was able to complete the setup and adjustments fairly quickly and with a little practice could cut good mortises even in red and white oak with the starter chisels provided. The owners manual is not very instructive and glosses over some important adjustments. You will have to figure out your own methods to attach the hydraulic cylinder and to loosen the sliding of the head against the column. My mortiser arrived with the head adjusted so... more info
Delta bench mortising tool:
I received my bench mortising machine in excellent condition. The box had suffered a beating but all was ok. Within an hour I had the tool assembled and ready for use. I had never used one before but was quite pleased with its ease of use. I was able to make exact mortises in no time at all. I had a project underway that required alot of mortises in maple from 2" to 4" thick. I had made mortises by hand and with a router but wanted to try a mortiser, and with the low cost I made the order. Glad I did, setup... more info
Solid Mortising machine:
Hello, After reading many reviews and researching mortising machines, I selected the Delta. I like the solid cast iron table. I can't comment on the chisels as I can't compare the Delta included chisels to others on the market. They worked fine. Tip- follow instructions and set the machine up carefully. When cutting mortises, cut the ends first. Don't make the mistake I did and tried to cut "over lapping" mortises thinking I could take little bites. This caused the chisel to wander. You need to... more info
