Though most tap water in the United States is considered good there may be chlorine and mineral deposits that can effect the taste or odor. You can haul bottled water from the supermarket or you can use the Brita water filter pitcher to filter, store and pour your drinking water. I was a victim of the Brita "Drink Responsibly" advertising campaign (summer 2008) and I bought the pitcher before I read the reviews here. Reading these (1 star) reviews allowed me to look for the problems described and I have not experienced them. I did not note a leaky top, although this may have been because I was being careful thanks to K.M. aka Squishy's review. Brita pitcher:

I bought this pitcher so I could stop buying bottled water, the only one I can drink is Evian. The water that came from the pitcher tasted awful so I won't be using it afterall. I am very dissappointed because I wanted to eliminate plastic from our home, now I can't because I can't tolerate the taste of the water. I will have to stay with my Evian. Therefore I cannot recommend this pitcher because I think it makes the water taste funny.

Lid really is problem:

It is really too bad that Brita could not have made the lid fit better on this pitcher...for the money you pay you should be able to expect better quality. I still gave it 4 stars since I am so pleased with how it works, how great my water tastes, and no more bottled water. I can cope with the lid issue, but if I had kids in and out of the fridge the spillage would be a big problem.

Decent Pitcher:

I agree with the complaint from other people about the lid being poorly designed. But this isn't the first Brita pitcher I have bought so I was aware of the issue and was also fine with the filter change indicator merely keeping track of time and not actual water usage. I have bought bad filters with the black spots only once. If that happens again, I will seriously consider not buying Brita picthers again. But the pitcher's body is of sturdy construction so I feel it is an adequate pitcher.
