Editorial Review:
890 series router comes with fixed base, plunge base and micro height adjustment knob for above-table bit adjustment. Includes carrying case. Featuring: 2-1/4 HP, 12 amp soft-start motor. Variable speed from 10,000-23,000 RPM with advanced electronic feedback to maintain constant cutter speed under load. Upper and lower power switches. Low noise/vibration. Above-table bit height adjustment, motor release, collet and bit access, and auto-engaging spindle lock for single wrench bit changes. Through-the-base dust collection. Large opening, see-through sub-base with quick-change release for tool-less changeover between router bases and router tables. Carrying case with bit and accessory storage easily detaches into a pedestal to place the router between cuts. Micro-height adjustment knob fits all 890 series routers and the 8529 router.
What's your biggest complaint about using a router in a table? Height adjustment, right? Welcome to the router of your dreams. Porter-Cable's routers are among the best in the industry, and they just went one step better with a simple but ingenious device called a "Router Table Height Adjuster." It does what it sounds like: lets you adjust bit height from above the table. That's just one of many reasons we're so impressed with the 895 kit. Soft start tames the voracious 12-amp motor so there's no twist at startup. Variable speed ranges from 10,000 to 23,000 rpm with electronic feedback. Both bases are among our favorites in the routing world for their ease of control and fit in hand. The plunge base rides smooth as silk, and the locking mechanisms and depth turrets area right where you'd naturally want them. Dust is collected right through the base, too, for a clean sightline. Another nice feature: For safety's sake, there's an automatic bit-changing power lock-off. This is the perfect outfit for the home woodworker--it's the only router you'll ever need, since the plunge base in included--as well as the professional, who demands the kind of performance Porter-Cable brings with this model.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

best router kit available:
this is by far the best router on the market for the price. PC stood up with their excellent engineering. lots of power in this router. the micro fine adjustment from above in the router table is just super. the edge guid works really well with this router combo as well. all in all its a very good router and i would recommend this router to anyone.
Plunge Base is Junk:
I bought the 895 when they first came out several years ago. In that time I've used it quite a bit and the following are my impressions. The bottom line is it's not worth the price they're asking these days ($280). The positives; 1)soft start - no jerking on start-up, 2) high/low switch - you can sit it down on it's top and it will turn off leaving you free to keep both hands on the router, 3) strong motor - I have rarely been able to bog the motor down, 4) above the table height adjustment -... more info
Not the Porter Cable it used to be:
I bought the 895 set (factory reconditioned but I don't know what the problem was) when my old Bosch 1606 developed problems. First, there is little that I would agree is "HEAVY DUTY"! I am NOT impressed with the new P-C--altogether too many of the critical components are plastic. Examples are both the rack and the pinion raise-lower mechanism and the switch. Already had to get a replacement from P-C for the cheap collet locking pin, as the original just sheared off. The collet lock for changing bits is a... more info
Router Kit:
Great all purpose router set. The expected Porter-Cable quality and the convenience of both a fixed and plunge bases. The adjustment wrench makes adjustments very easy while mounted to a router table. The carrying case and included accessories make this an incredible value.
