Editorial Review:

Includes 4224 24" x 42" Lathe - 1791254, Safety Shield, 3" Face Plate, Face Plate Wrench, 14" Tool Rest, Spur & Live Ball Bearing Centers, Knockout Rod, Spindle Lock, 24-Position Indexer, Remote Power Switch.

To truly appreciate this exquisite machine, you should really be required to turn a log on a bargain-basement lathe first. The difference, as they say, is like night and day.

And day is where you want to be, with this Powermatic planted solidly in front of you. It weighs about 900 pounds, and with that kind of heft, you know there'll be no vibration, no traveling - nothing but smooth operation. It stands on cast-iron legs atop 2-inch wide adjustable feet, so you can level it anywhere, and it truly is rock-solid. The headstock and tailstock are cast iron as well, and everything in between is nothing but the best.

With a working distance between centers of a king-sized 42 inches and a 24-inch swing over the bed, imagine what you could make: table legs, custom balusters, enormous bowls, platters, urns and, of course, pens. The three-horsepower motor provides belt-driven quiet speed ranges of 0-910, 0-2000 and 0-3500 rpm, giving you the speed you need for everything from roughing out a huge chunk of maple to wax-finishing a graceful candlestick. Changing speed ranges is a quick job: just lift the motor and slip the V-belt onto the appropriate step.

The 14-inch tool rest has a nice finger guide in its design, but you're likely to want a variety of supports so this machine can do anything you want it to, whether you're doing face work or turning between centers.

With this much power comes size, of course, and this lathe's footprint is more than 5 feet long, something to consider if you have a small shop (or consider what to get rid of to make more room for this!).

There's simply nothing lacking here; even the fit and finish are impeccable, as we'd expect from Powermatic. It's a big investment, but for professional, it's a no-brainer - this will give you years of flawless performance. And anyone whose heart is truly in turning, who loves to transform a chunk of wood into graceful art, you'll never regret a cent. -- Kris Jensen-Van Heste

This has got to be the best woodworking money I have spent to date.
I went for a grizly 12/35 after about 18 months of turning. Its like steping into a new BMW. So smoth and powerful.

Powermatic 4224 wood lathe:

I bought this lathe about a month ago. Super lathe--the Horse power and weight are well worth the extra cost. Plus I love the fact that if I need something for my lathe the folks at Powermatic are in Tn. I want service when I buy and that's what you get buying from Amazom and Powermatic. Thanks for everything.

Powermatic 2442 Lathe:

I've been using this lathe for over 2 years now and it sure is a heavyweight. I turn mostly bowls in the 14-20 inch diameter range and this is the machine to do it on. I moved up from a Jet that required the foundation that came with it to be anchored to the floor to keep it in one spot. This Powermatic at 960 pounds just doesn't move. The three speed pulley serpentine belt arrangement not only assures quiet operation but a great degree of freedom in choosing a speed for your work. Couple that to the three... more info

Powermatic 4224 wood lathe:

I've owned one of these big boys for approximatly 2 years, If you want to turn little things get a little lathe but if you want to turn big things(and little things) then you should get this machine. The variable speed is a dream come true just dial your speed. All of the controls are right where you need them. Take a nickel and stand it on edge on the head stock and fire it up and turn a bowl and when you get done pick up your nickel (still standing on it edge) Its approximatly 960 pounds and rock solid... more info
