Editorial Review:
Takes the hassle out of professional sanding operations with the Performax Bench Top Drum Sander. Featuring an exclusive SandSmart-controlled, infinitely variable feed rate from 0 to 10 feet per minute, this 22-by-44-inch sander gives the ultimate sanded finish with no machine overload. A self-cooling, precision-machined and balanced 5- by-22-inch drum made of extruded aluminum means less downtime and fast removal of stock. A 1-3/4 HP, continuous-duty motor operates at up to 1,700 RPM and handles heavier loads for longer periods of time. And, a precision-flattened reinforced steel conveyor bed feeds stock smoothly into the sander, while a no-slip power feed conveyor belt ensures consistent delivery. This versatile drum sander also features zinc-plated steel tension rollers mounted next to the drum, adjustable drum height and downward pressure for reduced snipe, and a 1/16-inch per turn height adjustment for faster adjustments and less downtime. A large, easy-to-use cast iron height adjustment hand wheel allows both radical height changes and minute adjustments for extremely precise stock removal.
Here's an intelligent machine that delivers the ultimate finish for the exacting professional woodworker, whether it's serious stock removal or the slightest shave. What impressed us the most is the SandSmart-controlled variable feed rate, ranging from 0 to 10 feet per minute. The SandSmart technology monitors the load on the drum motor and automatically maintains the highest feed rate without causing overload. If the load on the drum motor increases, the SandSmart control will decrease the feed rate or, under extreme conditions, stop the conveyor. Conversely, if the load decreases, SandSmart speed up the feed, but only to the point of the manual setting on the dial. Brilliant! Setup isn't too taxing: just a little assembly and then some calibrating and you're up and running. The 1-3/4 HP motor runs at up to 1,700 rpm, but there's virtually no snipe. Stock glides smoothly on the reinforced steel conveyor bed into the sanding area, where height and downward pressure are adjusted easily. The height adjustment wheel is big and easy to handle, letting you really crank it down and remove a lot of material or make the most minute adjustment for the lightest possible touch. Each turn of the wheel makes a 1/16th-inch change, and the mechanism is supported by a thrust bearing, so there's no struggle. The 44-inch width capacity is mirrored by an impressive list of stats: minimum length of workpiece is just 2-1/4 inches; maximum thickness is a beefy 4 inches; minimum thickness is a paper-thin 1/32nd inch. Abrasives change out easily, once you get the hang of it, but after that's it's very smooth sailing. One note: Be sure to have a dust collection system you can employ with this sander. The Performax is a pleasure to use and would be a delight to own.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Love it!:
I've had this machine for about a year now, and am blown away with how often I use it. I originally bought it for doors and table tops, but pretty much use it for everything. I'll joint, plane, and then run every part through @ 120 grit. One or two passes with a smooth or scraper plane during joinery, depending on the wood, and I have ready to finish parts!
Works fine.:
I bought this machine for sanding doors and cabinet doors/drawerfronts, since it has a large width capacity. It was easy to assemble and required only a small amount of tracking adjustment. This machine is not a planer. If its used to remove too much stock at a time the sandpaper will clog or you'll get burn marks on the wood. Its not a good choice for removing paint or old finishes, as the paper tends to clog in these instances also. If you're conservative in your feed rate and amount of material removed,... more info
Great sander:
I have been using this for a couple of weeks now and am very pleased. I just got the sander with no stand or in/outfeed tables.
Changing belts is pretty simple once you get the hang of attaching it at the motor end. A word or advice - use a small mirror to see exactly what you are dealing with. Once you do that it is very simple.
This unit is all cast iron and therefor very heavy. The dust cover is plastic, and for it's purpose it is adequate.
Never received complete product:
Attempted to buy this item twice, each time was only sent the bottom feed table and not the motor. Can not review the product because i have never receive a complete sander. after two months of waiting, i finely cancelled the order and went else where.
