We like this one by Jet because it's supremely lightweight, and that's good for your lathe's motor, but it's also tough as nails. It expands and contracts smoothly with lever action, expanding to grip the inside diameter of the bottom of a bowl you're gouging or contracting to clamp securely around a dowel threaded through the spindle and destined to be a Shaker-type peg.
The 2-inch jaws are perfect for smaller projects, including bowls, vases, small plates, finials, pegs and other work done on a mini- or midi-lathe. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Good for the price:
This chuck is a good little piece of machinery, keyword: "little". I've used it on quite a few projects and it performs well for small projects on small lathes (I have a 10 in. swing). Two reasons why 4 stars instead of 5: 1. You really have to crank on it to get it tight, and the two bars aren't very long, so it is a little hard on the palms. 2.
