Makita, 14.4V, 1/2" MXT Driver/Drill Kit, 3 Speed, Variable Speed, Reversible, Two Piece ND-31 Motor With Dual Ball Bearings For Longer Motor Life, 3 Speed All Metal Transmission Produces 25% Faster Working Speed, Shift Lock Drive System Instantly Shifts From Drill To Driver Mode, 2.5AH Ni-MH Batteries Outlast Nicad Batteries, Locking Ratcheting Chuck Securely Grips All Bits, Includes: 2 Each Battery, Charger & Tool Case.
Tool size and volts don't always tell you the whole story. Take this drill/driver, for example: It's downright little, weighing in under 6 pounds, and it measures out at a tad over 9 inches. What a cute little drill, you say? Stand back - this cute little drill packs a monster 450 in./lbs. of ripping torque, more than a fair number of bigger, beefier drills we've had the pleasure of using.
What's not to love, with all that power tucked into such a small, light, easy-on-your-body package? And there's awesome speed, too, with a three-tier system that offers 0 to 300 rpm in low range, 0 to 600 in mid-range and a top spread of 0 to 1,700 rpm in third speed, to suit whatever material you're drilling or driving into. Sometimes, you may encounter a little resistance if you're switching from low gear to high; if that happens, running the tool in mid-gear for a couple seconds completely alleviates any snag.
We probably don't have to tell you about Makita quality; their tools are made to last. The gear transmission here is all metal; the locking ratcheting chuck grabs bits like super glue; brushes are easily accessible for routine maintenance and reduced down time; the reversing switch has a center neutral position that functions as a lock-off for safety. They've even put a lot of thought into the design of the grip; it's rubberized and feels great in hand. Even the balance is perfect.
Whether you're in the construction trade, an avid do-it-yourselfer or just looking to buy your first drill, you absolutely won't regret buying this one. -- Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Strong, well built and powerful . . .a great drill motor!:
I bought this drill motor in order to match batteries with another 18V Makita tool I own. I had not purchased a new drill motor for over a nearly a decade and my existing tools were fading fast. The Makita is impressive in every aspect . . .and it has some new luxuries (considering the age of my previous drill motors) that I have come to appreciate, especially the hand tightening chuck. The battery life is great, charge time exceptional and the overall balance and feel of the tool is well within my... more info
Awesome Drill:
Balance feels great...Has plenty of power, 1/2 " chuck, easy to tighten with one hand. Bought this a few weeks ago, and the kit came with upgraded batteries, from 2.6 mha to 3.0 with L.E.D.'s attatched and swivel out so that you can see in the dark. Comes with the handle...overall very happy with it, used it to drill 3" deckmate screws into trex with no problems and great control...feels like an 18 volt with the weight of a 14.4v. What can I say its the best drill used. Will keep everyone posted with any... more info
finally some torque! Watch out Dewalt!:
I recently bought this drill to complement the 14.4 makita impact driver that I recently purchased. The drill they give as a bonus while nice, only has 350 in lbs of torque where this drill has 450. the difference is noticeable when you are boring holes for pipes and wires! This drill will spin a 2and 9/16 inch self feed bit no problem! There is a 3 speed gearbox, and a drill to driver switch that locks out the clutch, allowing you to save your desired clutch setting but turn it off for drilling operations.... more info
