Here's another example of upgrades on a tool we already thought couldn't get any better...but we were wrong. Hitachi's M12V router underwent a makeover that made some smart design changes as well as some great performance improvements, and the result is nothing short of excellence.
The most noticeable change, of course, is the router's appearance. Hitachi's new tools sport an aggressive new look, but function and design integrate nicely in the tool's ergonomics; the molded, grippy handles give you unsurpassed control. Another change at the top of our list is the repositioning of the variable speed adjustment. The dial was on top of the housing on the old version, but Hitachi's built it into the redesigned handles for convenience and safe speed changes while routing, keeping both your hands on the handles and your eyes on the workpiece.
The quick and fine adjustment knob is a single element, and we like how it functions. To change the knob's function, just flip the lever on the back of one of the plunge columns. In one position, the lever lets you quickly change plunge depth by turning the knob. Flip the lever the other way, and the knob becomes a super-fine depth adjuster. It's seamless.
At the risk of gushing, we were absolutely tickled with the removable spring in one of the plunge mechanisms that coverts this plunge model to the perfect table-mount router. Without the spring, the body slides smoothly and easily. The new dust diverter really helps keep you and your workpiece free of debris, too.
This is unquestionably one of the best routers for the exacting woodworker, whether a hobbyist or professional.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Not Perfect, best bang for your buck:
Ill start by saying that I have 2 of these and one 2 base Hitachi kit (KM12VC) and am very pleased with all of them. As others have noted there are some plastic parts that are a little disappointing, but none of mine have broken so far. I have one mounted and the other for freehand use. The edge guide seems very high quality, but the 1/2 inch collet seems a little thin walled, although I have not noticed the chatter that others have. The dust collection is a nice feature, but doesnt work as well as it... more info
Many faults and defects:
For reference I have used the Hitachi M12V for years and it is a wonderful router. I purchased the M12v2 for a 2nd router assuming it would be as capable as its predecessor. It has several defects and design faults that were so blatant I returned the unit without ever using it. I will be purchasing another manufacturer's 3 hp router after this experience. I have listed problems below and attempted a general order of importance first to last. 1) The tightening sleeve in the locking collet nut will not... more info

Hitachi Router:
This is my first router and I love it. I have used several other routers, but this one is better than the others I have used.
