My husband has always used the "tap and listen" method for finding studs-- checking for the difference in sound and then driving in a nail to see if he had found a stud. To say the least, it was a hit and miss and very time-consuming method. I searched for a electronic stud finder to give him as a Xmas present, but was discouraged by their negative reviews. Simple, straightforward, and pretty much idiotproof, this little tool is a delight to use - not only because it works, but because it's actually *fun*! The tiny little magnets are amazingly strong, and can locate the nails or screws used to hold sheetrock or lath to studs every time. The best magnetic stud finder I was able to find and it really works to narrow in exactly where the wall or ceiling stud is hidden behind that sheet rock being held in place with either sheet rock nails or sheet rock screws. A really great product.
