Great for learning to sew!: My husband got me the Esteem on sale at Target for $99 about 5 weeks ago. Prior to that, I had absolutely no experience sewing and had never even touched a sewing machine. I was able to take it out of the box, get the bobbin wound, thread the needle, and start sewing in about an hour. The automatic needle threader DOES work, but you have to really look closely at first and see the tiny hook so you know exactly how to put the thread; once you understand exactly how you need to put the thread, it's a cinch... Fatal jam the first time I used it: My husband got me this model for my birthday last week. I have been sewing for a few months now - borrowing a friend's Brother CS6000 which worked really well for me (I totally recommend that one!). The Singer 1732 was pretty simple to set up, and I was excited to have an uncomplicated first machine. I followed the instruction manual exactly to set up the machine and threads. Upon the first press of the pedal, the bobbin thread jammed - I was unable to remove the jammed thread or even operate the machine... Once you get to know it, great machine: I would say this is an okay machine for beginners. I say this because some seem to have the impression that the machine is supposed to do everything for you. First read the manual thoroughly so you can understand how the machine works. Second, in the beginning, my stitches kept getting tangled, and I realized all I needed to do was fix the tension.
